The Norley That I Knew...

Started by: jarvo (30253)

...Was a million years ago. Miss Saxon taught us at Robert Lewis. Mick Bailey's dog, Rocky, often visited us in the playground. The travellin' actors came to perform Rumplestiltskin. Nigel Slater's Dad had a shop. And all the bonfire's on The Green lit up the autumn night...

The White Hunter sold shoelaces. John Hunt jumped from his bedroom window. And Mr Worthington lost his marbles. The West Ward Christmas Party brought us joy. Walter saw us across Ormskirk Road, and the winds of change were light years away.

The Norley that I knew has gone. The memories live on...

PS: And I lived at the other side of the tracks.

jarvo i remember the white hunter but for the life of me i can not remember his name..... i have a lot of happy memories from the time i spent on norley hall we had not much money but we knew how to enjoy our selves . i remember the dads coming out to play cricket and foot ball with the kids . the estate used to be buzzing with kids but we had no lap tops or game boys to amuse us.. the hours i spent with my mates sat on the wall at the norley shops or we used to climb over the gate and sit at the back of the butchers shop loads of us .. we never caused any harm just had a natter a sly smoke and a..laugh i remember one of the lads we used to call him scooby as he was always singing scooby dooby doo is first name i can not remember now but his last name was cunliff he lived be hind the shops he had a brother Terry who had the nick name TART and a sister Margaret ..well one night we were all behind the butchers and scooby was climbing on the garage roofs that were behind the shops and they had asbestos roofs and he was jumping from one to another ..and as he was going along he was singing scooby dooby doo were are you and all at once we heard scooby dooby dooo were are yooooooooooooooooo arghhhhhhhhhhh well we all went running around to see what had happened and he was laid flat out on the floor of one of the garages ..he had gone straight through the roof . he did not harm himself thank fully. and he was just laid there with the wind knocked out of him.. we could do nothing but laugh when we knew he was all right.. we had some great laughs and there were some great characters.. happy days .. and jarvo i have just remembered who we knew as white hunter it was mr Jones. Sylvia Jones dad .. she married a character called Kenny Turton . he always wore a suit and dicki bow and we used to sing to him in the streets Kenny had a penny and he thaught he was rich and all he could buy was two hapenny chicks .. he was a gentle man though all ways said Hello to every one and asked how they were ..and funny enough he now lives in Dowhall Green not far from us .. we knew who our neighbours were and they would give you there last cup of sugar ..and beleive me we were asked many a time had we got a cup untill me dad gets paid on friday lol

Fred: Walter was the policeman who stood at the top of Norley Hall Avenue, near the chemists. He was a motorcycle officer and his job was to see all the kids from Enfield Street and our estate safely across the busy Ormskirk Road to school.

Rose: You're correct. He was also known as "Noddy" Jones. I think Lol used to collect glasses also.

Thanks, jarvo,

my sentiments also about Norley 'back then' even though I lived at the top of Helvellyn Rd. Norley was great place as many of us will remember but it was the times also. The 1950's. I remember people talking about an incident where the police had marched a chap along Fleet Street to the station in Pem, AND...he was in handcuffs...!!!! a rare thing for those times.

Makes you wonder just what we have lost in order to have 'better' times today...

Bernard used to live near us in dorset close when we first moved to norley. and when the houses were being done up we were all moved out and in to other houses on norley .. Bernard used to frighten some of the kids who did not know him . he used to hang out the window and give folk a mouthful of abuse but he had certain learning difficulties .and on the odd ocasion he would make a bid for free dome and would run of down the street ..and Mary ann is mum used to shout at the top of her voice Bernard get back in this house but in a manner that would frighten a police horse if she told me to get back in the house i would have got back in the house.. the family used to keep themselves to them selves though never did any one any harm and the other memebers of the family the sister and one of the other brothers were nice ..and it is a small world only yesterday we were talking about Bernard as one of my freinds used to support him in a house he lived in..tommy the white hunter i knew was mr Jones and i think he lived on lamberhead road at one time.Stars not sure what is second name was i think his wife now i come to think about it also collected glasses at the same time

Rose; stars is right it was Walt Charnock, he always sat on the right hand side of the concert room by the doors with his wife. He was a slim bloke with white/gray hair and they both wore specs.

Judith; both Bernard Brown and the young man people called yaya lived near you on Avon rd and Severn drive.
Mary Ann Brown was a lovely lady and had to put up with a lot looking after Bernard, and didn’t get a lot of help from the authorities, she called a spade a spade, and he frightened the hell out of me too thanks to your Eric.

There was an entry in between our house and sheridans on Avon rd and Carole was in dining room on her own when she heard an eerie voice whispering Carole Carole, it was our Eric in entry talking through ventilation bricks!!

speaking of carefree days when we were young, meself Peter Gilbert Walter Mcnicholas and Josie Foster decided in a wild impulsive way to visit a friend who had moved, so we walked it to Ormskirk !!! after an eternity we found his house and spent the afternoon playing .his dad was going to run us home in his car but after an unfortunate accident with a medicine ball and a prized collection of bird's eggs he chucked us out we set out to walk back and about halfway we called at a house to beg a drink of water, the kindly lady gave us a drink and after hearing of our plight gave us bus fare to get us home as it was getting late .when we finally got back all the neighbours were out scouring the streets for us ,as they did in those days when kids went missing, boy were we in bother that time never allowed out the street for a week after that great days great memories

Judith; sad news about pey higham, his dad died young with a disease which only affected the males in the family so peter lived his life to the full. This is why threads like this are great so we know where friends have gone or if they have passed away.

I will put a list of names from norley on here soon but it will take me a while.

I lived in the middle of Thirlmere Road.....on the right as you turn up from Borrowdale where it bends and then carries on up. Depends how old you are, nana. I'm 67 so would you have lived there when I did ?? The Purcells lived in Borrowdale and the O'Learys lived on the corner house and Ronnie and John Simpkin lived on the other corner....other side of Borrowdale. In fact, my best friend then was Kathleen O'Leary who lived on the corner. Can't place anybody called Kath or John and Alan. Yes, kath, Sid was a tall lad but he was younger than me. He had an older brother who I think was older than me but not much.....think he was Derek. Kevin was Kathleen's brother but again younger than me and Eric simpkin was Ronnie (who was a woman !!) and John's son. Both the O'Leary's and the Simpkins lived on each corner of Thirlmere Road and Rydal Walk. You sound as if you might be younger than me. Did you know Jean Aspey.....she's 6 years younger than me...61. We lived next door to the Aspeys all the time we lived there......I'm still friendly with Norma (Jean's Mum) who's 86 now. Or did you know Sandra Ralphs....they lived next door but one to us and Sandra had that dress shop in Pemberton at the bottom of the alleyway from Fleet Street down into Pemberton. She had it for years.....don't know what it is now because we live in Hindley now so I've lost touch a bit with Pemberton but we go seeing Norma regularly.

do you mean the little odd shaped shop cherries that was on the corner the last time i went in that it was a shop that sold all sorts of haberdashary stuff mind you i am going back a lot of years used to go up stairs to it not a very big shop was it ..

going back to norley i am just having a little think and DOH just realised the places around norley are named after places towns and counties never gave it a thaught after all these years .. so that means i lived in Dorset and Somerset lol and Hellvellin was only a short walk away .. how lucky were we as kids did not have to go far to see the world did we lol..

rbilly......it was an odd shaped shop and not so big and Sandra did sell all sorts but you didn't have to go upstairs only up a couple of steps if you wanted to try something on....it is years since she gave it up though.
Some of the roads were named after the Lake District...Thirlmere. Grasmere, Buttermere, Rydal...we lived in the Lake District and didn't know it then !!

Just recalling how my family arrived in Wigan and how they came to live in norley. Mum was evacuated from Liverpool during the war to Southport, to a lovely family. After a couple of years she was put on a train. aged 7, heading in the direction of Wigan where her Mum and Dad knew some of her family were. They were all put in a house on Ormskirk Road at Pemberton, where Lamberhead Green Workingmens club is now. There was at least three families sharing the house, and from what I can gather big families. When the house was demolished they were all re-housed on the new estate. I never actually lived there but remember the good times as grandchildren do. What surprised me the most is how much I do remember and such good ones!!!

Jack and May Gregory lived on that manor somewhere. I can't recall the name of the street. My mum used to run a catalogue in the 1960's (John Myers and Grattan)and my dad used to go up and collect the "club money" every Sunday morning from a Mrs Myatt. The name Nellie or Elizabeth comes to mind, she lived just around the corner from May and Jack. My dad used to take me up there for a ride and then we would visit May and Jack at the same time. Jack was my dads cousin he was the steward at SLG Labour club amongst others. Anyone remember them? Brian (their son) died about eight years ago. He was only early 50's. Great chap he was. Their other son, Alan, has a pub in Cheshire.

We went to live on norley in 1950 , I would be about 6 or 7 . A lot of the houses were just being built at the top end. The building sights were a haven for us kids to play. Piles of sand and bricks to make dens. At the bottom of helvellyn rd there used to be a watchman with only one hand, and a hook where his hand should have been. He used to chase after us waving his hook at us if he caught us playing in the half built houses. I was terrified of him, I would run like hell across The Green as fast as my little fat legs would go.
To this day I get uneasy if I see a hooked hand. 33 years ago when I married my husband at Chorley registry office I nearly died when I saw that the registrar had a big hook instead of a hand.

Hi rbilly, the woman you were referring to as two gill lil was Lily Gaskel, she had two daughters, Christine who I think would be around your age and Lyne who was about my age or a year older.I see Dennis Hughes (Mackin)now and again when he brings his Evertonian mates to my local when they are playing Wigan or Bolton, they were here yesterday enroute to Oldham, two coach loads full, great crack. He says that his mum Kathleen is always reminising about the days on Norley and never fails to talk about mum and dad and what a lovely people they were.

Rose.....When I lived on Norley till 1971, did Freddy Stevens not live with the rest of his family in Helvellyn Road....a few houses down from the top near the bus terminus. There were a few brothers of them and was Freddy a Ted. I can remember him dancing.....jiving..... in the West Ward when they had club nights on a Thursday night.....brilliant dancer !! Sometimes fights used to break out.....my mother did her nut cos I went there but they were good nights then. Or am I on the wrong Freddy but this one had the silver streak that you mention. He used to sit with me on the last bus coming home sometimes.....he was ok was Freddy. Now whether they moved behind the shops, I don't know but I'm pretty sure he lived at one time in Helvellyn Road.

rbilly,

The Mackins were next door but one neighbours of ours, they lived at 70 Helvellyn Road. A lovely family, especially the girls, Pat and Margaret. I met Jimmy and Charlie many years ago in Pem when I was on holiday. We had so much fun back in the 50's. Their parents were so honest and straight. A better family could not be found anywhere.

yes and no,

Margaret and Charlie were close to my age, Pat was a year or so younger, and all the others were going down in age from us.

I loved the girls (naturally) and Tony (Curly) was one of my favourites. So sad about him.

I was so pleased to see Jimmy making something of himself, I believe he was in IT, and I am hopeful for all our old playmates from the 50's.

I don't really know a lot about Norley apart from playing in a group at West Ward in the 70s.
I do remember though, that a couple of lads i worked with at a warehouse in the 1970s, lived on Norley.

Their names were; Albert Cavill and John Tudor and they'll both be in their 50s now.

Bert had a twin sister called Anne I think, and John was a big hefty lad.

Anyone know them?

I remember walking home from Robert Lewis with my sisters in the very early sixties. In those days school finished at four o'clock and it would be getting dark when we set off home. Near to Christmas, we would compare all the Christmas trees that were on show in the houses of Thorburn Road and Norley Hall Avenue. There were no outside displays in those days, thank God...

Everything had its place. Money was tight, but we appreciated the small things. Happy afternoons walking home up Norley.

Mr Murphy was the Headmaster at St Cuthberts. A green fence separated Robert Lewis and St Cuthberts.

We hated the Catholic kids, and they hated us. Was silly, but there you go.

A lot of Catholic kids feared Murphy; he used to beat them black and blue.

He'd be in prison today.

The palava with the sinclairs unknown daughter was awful. They kept her locked in a bedroom for years, alone while they went to west ward 7 nights a week. When the day arrived when she was being removed an ambulance turned up and according to one of the ambulance men she was stuck to sheets with bed sores, shit, piss an monthlies. And to top it all it was rumored that her brother Joe had been having sex with her.

I think this thread is more noticeable now it's moved back

Jarvo. You are wrong about Mr Murphy. He was far from a cruel man.
Two of his teachers used the cane indiscriminately, he never did.
He was a fair minded man but strict.
He was also choir master for St. Cuthberts church, I know, I was in the choir. He was a dedicated headmaster and a dedicated Catholic.
The myths of him and Sister Rose are so very wrong.

Hyprocrite: A person who pretends to be something they are not...

I don't get it. I aint pretending to be anybody. I am just stating facts about a teacher who taught at St Cuthbert's over 40 years ago. Facts given to me by other people. I didn't know Mr Murphy personally, but these stories were rife in a time when teachers did get away with coming the heavy hand with young kids. It was the norm then.

This is a good thread. Norley teachers are relevant.

How does that make me a hypocrite?

But I dont see offensive language and juvenile name calling as being big or clever. I appreciate however you do and that you sometimes like to use it in a desperate attempt to gain the upper hand but I am way above all that and its something I dont usually pay attention to and generally prefer to leave to the other antagonists big-mouths and trouble makers.... hence the reason I chose to ignore you......hope very much you understand

You dish out offensive remarks and defamatory comment to sensible rational adults then complain when you get no response.......thats a very grown up way to behave isnt it TOM?

Jarvo. I will say again that Mr Murphy was my headmaster. He was strict as were all teachers back then but I had no fear of him. He was not a bully but he did not hesitate to punish any one who stepped out of line.
I don't ever recall the word bully being attached to a teacher back then, let alone a headmaster. He was well respected.

Because jathbee bullying wasnt talked about then as it is now, but it was about, and the majority of teachers were bullies, but in them days we called stricked and no nonsense taken from them, bring them back the bullies and perhaps the kids of today will show a bit more respect for the teachers and society in general.

I used to live on the corner of Lamberhead rd and Norley hall avenue, there was lots of subsidence around our house, our back garden sank in places about five or six inches and if you look on google maps (street view) you can see in two places where the road.collapsed and has been repaired.

judith; Brian Gregory was well known on norley, he played rugby for wigan. His mam (may greg) was the steward in the west, someone commented about her on here and said she had died two years ago but I have seen her this year in that old folks home on montrose avenue, she has dementia but I talked to her for a while, she remembered my mam and family.
Unless she has died recently I don't know, but when I go again soon I hope I will let you know.
If may is still with us I'm sure she would like visitors.

Hi Liz (Markland) now Farnworth, I noticed you mentioned my brother Eric Farrimond, who still lives in the same house. I don't know if you remember, as you were much younger than me, that my dad and yours were mates and used to run the West Ward lads fishing club, my dad Jimmy Farrimond and yours, took us all to Ireland fishing, you must have come along. I also used to fish with Roy, so sad about his early passing. My dad also died early, he was on a fishing match at Elton res, with West Ward when he had a heart attack.

Must say what memories it has brought back reading through this thread

Liz, I have to smile when I remember that, we first went to a place called Balinasloe, on the river suck, and yes we were in tents, but at night we used to go to the local pubs in town even though we were only 12 or 13 years old. They would put us young lads in a back room and serve us drinks. I think your Roy was a couple of years older than me, and he was probably the ringleader.

Was thinking back the other day. Does anyone remember the "Scrap" between Jimmy Price and Tony Compton? Started in the games room one snowy Sunday afternoon and spilled out and down the Backs of Ormskirk Rd. Overran into a back-yard and a woman came out chasing them out with a brush. Then back into the club for a pint before last orders

in the early 60s, me and my brother used to get a hair cut, once a month, puddin basin style , from a guy called Jack Dawber, in his kitchen on Norley Hall Avenue.Francis Rimmers family were next door to one side, Clarkes lived next door on the other side.
Then as we got older, started going to Ken the barber at top of Pem when he was in that side alley just up from chemist .

Ken was on the right in the alleyway, just up from where taxi place is. You are not far off with 45 years ago moving to Loch Street, I was about 12, so 1970 ????
Walshy...you might be right, lots of years ago so gets hard to remember exact ! Then I remember Ainscoughs a few doors further up again.
jarvo.... not sure about Annie... but if you imagine where the Dawbers lived on Norley.... this one was middle right of a block of 4 houses , passage to left of house through into their back garden. Hope that makes sense !

Just introducing myself as a long ago Norley resident. Mum and Dad were the first tenants of 6 Thirlmere Road way back when I was about 12. Some people I remember were a Bob Sherburn, Barbara Wolfenden, Marcia Ruby Darrington. There was also twin lads who lived on Helvelyn Road, but for the life of me I can't recall their names, must be getting senile at age 73
Now that I have found this site I will be a regular from now on.

I can remember moving to Norley in the sixties from Marsh Green I would be seven or eight and seeing people on a Sunday morning with their hair entwined in the hawthorn bushes that lined Norley Hall Avenue after they'd been on the Cornbrooks ale in the west ward.
At that time my dad used to drink in the Norley pub but go in the west on a Sunday afternoon, you can guarantee mam and dad weren't on speaking terms on monday.

How does it go "tell yer dad his tea's on table"

When I got a bit older we used to hide in the hawthorns with a brick and a few coins and when the drunks came out of the west we would drop the coins on the brick, have you ever seen a drunken man crawling on the floor looking for his money. we hadn't a lot of money but we had lots of fun.

The house that we used to live in is now fields but I could still picture it, rbilly standing in front of the lamp post having a photo taken with her friend Mary Mallone, another photo of me looking all sullen because I didn't want my photo taken, wearing Hot Pants, "first time around" so that tells you how long ago it was, sure rbilly has the photo's somewhere. Welcome, Arkie. I hope your John is recovering after his health scare. Please keep me in touch of his progress and how he is keeping. I haven't seen him for so long, and we go back a long way to when we were teenagers.

Thank you.

Alan Law was the same age as our Bobby. I think they played in the same Pem Primary football team.

Pem Primary had the same kit as Wolverhampton Wanderers.

I think Mr Millard liked Billy Wright.

I am in Australia at the moment and was talking to him at Surfers Paradise.
He has come a long way from Norley but remembers his roots. He left in the seventies and is a proper Aussie now.

Frances Brown was in my class...Everybody fancied clever Frances. She waltzed her 11 plus and went to the Girls' High School along with Dorothy Taylor and Margaret Connolly. Jean Lowe was the dark horse making it 4 girls passed...

Oh, I forgot Hilary Parkinson.

5 clever wenches.

Did any lads pass?

I might not have passed my 11 plus, but I was the best newt catcher this side of marsh green clay hole.

Hi all,
I lived at 22 Ribble Drive, you could look up Trent Road from our living room window. Recognise a lot of the names that's been posted. Starting with the girls I fancied in no particular order Liz Martland , Anne Tame, great girl and sadly missed. Our next door neighbour Pat Taylor came knocking late one night to tell me Ann had died. I always thought it was a hole in her heart? Another fancy was Angela Foster from Lamberhead Green, but I think Geoff Duckworth asked her out before I had plucked up courage. Jean Halsall lived across the road from our hous. Mates were Dave Martland, Kevin Wynn, I went on holiday with Steve Brown and his parents to Anglesey. We were another Jones family but not one that's been mentioned yet. My brothers were George , sadly not with us any more but still here in spirit, and Phil married Barbara Gee from Orrell. Lots of memories and will post some more soon, well the ones that are printable.
Love the thread
Tom

Liz,
I was too shy to make my feelings known lol. I left Wigan in 1976 , it sounds like a long time but in my mind it,s just the blink of an eye. I still love Wigan and have great memories. I remember Stan Hart shooting me in the ankle with his .22 rifle. He lived in Humber Place, I carried on playing football for about half an hour with your Dave and the gang, then the pain kicked in and they had to carry me home, then on a bus to the infirmary. Luckily it only left an hole in the bone. My dad said I was lucky because "we're there,s no sense, ther,s no feeling!!" I took it has a back handed compliment. Anyhow hope you and your family are doing well, give my regards to Dave.

Dear oh dear I hope your not trying to antagonize me jarvo just like you do with some of the people on here, and your right I wasn't in the upper class in pem primary, furthermore I'm glad I was in the lower class because you were in the cissy class (with a few exceptions) playing with the girls and their dolls, that's why you went to Highfield and not pem boys ha ha.
I looked upon school as a precursor to life as an adult, now then with all that education you've had are you still working six days a week and still taking second hand furniture from anyone who wants to get rid of their old rubbish?
What's about you I hear you say, we'll I haven't done all the things I would have liked but I have represented Great Britain twice and designed my own house and organised the build of it, and if it's not worth twice the value of yours then I'll plat sh-t, but life isn't about wealth it's about friendship and happiness, now then I have lots of friends and I'm happy as Larry unlike you who has only one or two mates and is going to die a lonely old grouch and sooner than you think if someone tells Stew Brown about this thread ha ha. See you next week my mate.

I can remember mi mam knitting me a balaclava when I went to Pem Primary, I looked like one of the knights of the round table and it kept me warm, I can't see the kids of today doing that, they have to have the best clothes money can buy. We didn't have much money but when your a kid and nobody had much then, style didn't matter, or am I kidding myself?

Cuthberts church was packed with a couple of hundred in there, as was the swan later.

A nice, well liked lad.

This:

The sun has dropped over the rooftops of Gloucester Road as the boys of Pemberton Primary trot down to St Cuthbert's to play the auld enemy.

They look splendid in their gold and black shirts as they go past. It is early autumn and soon the nights will draw in. I am going the other way, home through Wiltshire Place and up Norley. I am still at Robert Lewis and the happiest days of my young life are coming to an end: soon we will make the move to Pem Primary, the two schools merging as one.

As I cross Ormskirk Road, my throat is already sore, and within three weeks I will feel the beginnings of the illness that will lay me low and put my young life at risk.

The schools are coming out and everywhere kids are heading home. It is September, 1963, and a time that I will never forget. The midnight fire will soon burn, night after night, casting ghostly shadows on the wall...

There has been many changes over the sixty odd years since my birth at number one Helvellyn Rd. But as long as I live, so will they all, with not a single change.

Yes, and miners and their families had loads...

Always well paid, for face or surface work, their coal sheds were full to bursting.

While others, who worked considerably harder in mills and factories, were ripped off by coal merchants making a fortune charging them double price per bag.

I'm glad you posted that.

Perks of the job, eh?

It was only in later years that the miners were better off thanks to a good strong union Ye Gods, you are one mean minded, jealous owd sod.

The miners got lost in their own self importance. They thought the country couldn't manage without them; and for a dark time in the early seventies, we were held to ransom. How wrong they were.

Visibility was a few feet, it was so bad.

At four o'clock the kids were allowed out. It was fun for us as we crept slowly home, alone.

How times change. No smogs and a thousand grand parents (in cars) picking up their grand children...

Norley was buzzing with kids back in the day. A war was raging with rival gangs from one street or another. Territorial feuds and stone throwing were common. We had May queens, with the lads dressed as cowboys or Indians with the odd Davey Crocket thrown into the mix, girls dressed as faires, gypsies or queens, parties on grass verges, with ambrosia of the gods, consisting of jam butties, fairy cakes and fizzy pop.
Bommy neet was a special time of year. Us kids would go door knocking for flammable materials which were dragged, pushed and heaved to the chosen site. We told tales of horror around the yet unlit bommy and posted guards to defend from the bommy raiders. We sat on freezing cold steps and pavements for hours on end begging 'A penny for the guy' to buy sparklers and penny bangers for the big night.

Apart form Christmas it was the most magical time of year for us dirty faced, ragged arsed, kids.

We played out in old clothes our best were saved for school and church. Dirty? Of course we were, Norley was still a building site when we moved there. I was aged three and we had moved from the slums in Scholes. We had a proper bath in our brand new council house, not a tin one, so us kids were given a nice hot bath due to a coal fired back boiler.
